SOLVENT AND COUPLING AGENT Since normally over 50% of the formulation is the solvent and coupling agent, its properties are very important. Glycol ethers and C4 and higher alcohols are most commonly used. In addition to solubilizing all of the components of any individual formulation, the solvent should also provide reserve solvent power capable of making this particular fluid miscible with all other hydraulic-brake fluids now in common use at all conditions of operation. In addition, the solvent should have the following properties: High boiling point Very low freezing point Low viscosity Small change in viscosity with temperature Water solubility (to impart water tolerance to the formulation) Low hygroscopicity Low effect on natural rubber Noncorrosiveness |
